Apart from being a member of Vampire Weekend, Chris Baio has an amazing solo career for nearly ten years now. All of his output has been of consistently high quality, but Dead Hand Control (released last Friday via Glassnote) is his finest work to date.
On the LP Baio pulls off a collection of captivating, beautiful synth pop, that draws you in with great melodies, tons of hooks and confident vocals. Songs seamlessly slip in and out and we have to admire his decision to make some of them really long — “Caisse Noire” is 7 minutes long, while both “Dead Hand” and “O.M.W.” (that is co-written by Ezra Koenig) go on for nearly 10 minutes each, jointly creating a blissful, atmospheric and apocalypse-themed new wave trip.
