[video] Nation of Language – Too Much, Enough

Ahead of September’s release of the new album Strange Disciple, Nation of Language have shared another of its tracks, a great new wave cut “Too Much, Enough”.

It is released alongside star-studded and probably their best music video so far, which features Emmy-nominated actor Jimmi Simpson, fellow musicians Reggie Watts, Kevin Morby, Tomberlin, Moldy Peaches’ Adam Green, and LVL UP’s Greg Rutkin, plus more than a dozen other close friends, and familiar faces. The surreal visual masterpiece was directed by Robert Kolodny.

Talking about the new song, the band shared the following:

«Too Much, Enough’ is a song born out of an exhaustion with the 24 hour news cycle and the outrage bait it uses to get everyone permanently wound up. It seems the only way to find an edge in the media business is to appeal to our most base instincts of disgust (see: the high ratings of Fox News, etc.), and we end up suffering both individually and collectively for it.

When it came to creating a visual to go alongside the song, we didn’t want the music video to be its own form of outrage bait so we went with a more absurdist approach, gathering some friends of ours, and of our incredible director Robert Kolodny, to make something fun and outlandish to that effect. We also laced the video with as many NOL-related Easter eggs and iconography as possible to give anyone watching an opportunity to play along at home and be a part of that absurdity. It felt good to try to name a problem for ourselves without leaning on fear and rage.

It’s a powerful thing to deny someone the ability to manipulate your most destructive emotions, and that’s something we want to celebrate here.

The overarching theme of Strange Disciple is infatuation and how one’s reality can be warped by it. We went a more romantic route with that on the previous video, but News is one of those less interpersonal activities it feels like everyone takes part in, so we wanted to show our disciple is just as susceptible to it as any other figure».

[video] Juan Wauters – Mensaje Codificado

Last month Juan Wauters released his excellent album Wandering Rebel via Captured Tracks, and now he is sharing a new video for the album’s standout track, “Mensaje Codificado”.

Juan has been on fire with the music videos recently, with awesome visuals for “Milanesa al Pan”, “Modus Operandi”, “Nube Negra”, “Millionaire”, and the new one is a great addition to this solid list. Filmed by Fatos Marishta at a local bar in Uruguay, it follows Wauters around a bar, drinking pints with locals, playing pool, making the seemingly mundane beautiful and engaging to watch.

Last month France’s Unschooling announced their new LP New World Artifacts which will be out on October 6 via Bad Vibrations Records. The band already teased us with “Brand New Storm”, and now we are getting another song, “Ribbon Road”. It’s an inventive free-form avant-jazz stomper, soaked in art punk grooves and sensibilities.

The single is accompanied by the music video (made by Luisa Loreal and Vincent Fevrier) and is led by two basses, two drums and guitars in unison with saxophones recorded in collaboration with Levi Gillis.

[video] Molly Burch – Physical

Molly Burch has announced her new album Daydreamer which will be out on September 29 via Captured Tracks.

Along with the news she is sharing a new single/video “Physical”, a dark and catchy synth pop track that features driving rhythms, emotive vocals, and an infectious chorus.

It was the first song Burch and producer Jack Tatum (Wild Nothing) worked on together, setting the tone for the rest of the LP’s sound. The track is about Burch’s public struggles with PMS, but the lyrics can easily resonate more broadly.

[video] The New Eves – Original Sin

Pagan-folk, krautrock and punk may seem like an unlikely combination, but the new Brighton band The New Eves can do just that and much more.

Today sees the release of their debut single via Broadside Hacks Records and Slow Dance. It features a haunting cut “Mother”, which debuted on this year’s well-regarded Slow Dance Compilation, plus a new track “Original Sin”, which is out with the music video directed by the band. It’s a perfect example of their unconventional approach to music and their ability to create something truly original.
