[album] Eyesore & The Jinx – Jitterbug

Jitterbug, the debut record by Eyesore & the Jinx, is a haunting exploration of the complexities of health set against the backdrop of personal tragedy and societal turmoil. Recorded in the aftermath of Josh Miller’s (vocals, bass, lyrics) significant loss and the realization of his mortality, the album serves as a testament to resilience and the human capacity for rebuild and transformation.

With vibrant, angular rhythms and tight guitars, the LP delves deep into the darker recesses of the human psyche, offering a raw and introspective journey through the gloom and despair that have characterized the past few years. The production, helmed by Daniel Fox from Gilla Band, is top-notch, perfectly capturing the raw energy and intensity of the band’s sound.

All songs here are true gems, which teeter on the brink of collapse yet captivate with their fragile beauty. Such smashers as “No More Nails” and “The Itch” are destined to be anchors of the band’s upcoming live shows, and it is great to have the classic “Sleepless” in its definitive form. “What Doesn’t Kill You” is also a standout, a brooding, fantastic closer with brilliant lyrics.

Overall, it is a punchy, vulnerable and sad album. But also it’s the one that somehow gives hope and power to change things, and reminds us that even in our darkest moments, we are never truly alone.

[song] Eyesore & The Jinx – No More Nails

Eyesore & The Jinx are back with a brand new single titled “No More Nails”, a hard-hitting number that shapes between contemporary post-punk and loud, noisy indie rock. It is out with the announcement of their long-awaited debut LP Jitterbug, set for release on November 17. The album was recorded at Yellowbird Studio (Wirral) during the Summer of 2022 and produced by Daniel Fox (Gilla Band).

Speaking of the new track Josh Miller (vocals, bass) says:

“When setting out to write our debut album, I didn’t have a theme in mind. Instead I chose to write about whichever subject felt most pertinent at the time. Over the course of several months though, it became clear that there was a consistent thread amongst the songs regarding control or lack thereof, particularly in relation to the human body.

For as long as I can remember I’ve bitten my finger nails compulsively, often til they bleed. Lately they have resembled what a close family member called ‘cornflakes’ owing to their gross, little, distorted shape. It’s a habit I’ve tried to shake many times, but have failed at. I’ve speculated as to why I do this, and I don’t think it’s too much of a leap to assume that this is a symptom of an ongoing anxiety disorder.

‘No More Nails’ then, is a song about compulsive behaviours and how we use our bodies to map our brains’ complex internal processes. It’s also a song about my gross, little cornflake fingernails that I’ve bitten into oblivion, and will likely continue to do so for the rest of my days”.

[song] Eyesore & The Jinx – An Ideas Man

There is a possibility that you are one of the lucky ones who did not suffer from the ubiquitous economic, energy and housing crisis, but the probability of this is quite low. While each of us is thinking about where to find the money to pay for the recalculation of expenses for the winter we endured, landlords enjoy their passive income (while blaming young people for their “insolvency”).

Liverpool trio Eyesore & The Jinx are fed up with this and are lashing out with caustic sarcastic comments about society (or rather, about its individual representatives) on their new track “An Ideas Man”. Under the brisk rhythm of bass guitar and drums, the group makes fun of exploitation disguised as good deeds. As the phrase goes, the first step to solving a problem is speaking it out loud.

The single was recorded in the Summer of 2022 at Yellowbird Studio (Wirral) with producer and mixer Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) at the helm. It would also be released on a 7″ with the B-Side “Do What You Love” on May 5.
