[ep] Sour Blue – Schema

Schema is the debut release from Sour Blue, a Los Angeles-based creative collective featuring multi-instrumentalists, audio and visual artists, and producers.

The members of the group should already be familiar for you if were reading this blog during the last couple of years — the musicians involved are Chris Cubbison (CGI dog), Devin Bierman (Dorvin Borman), John Warlick (John War), Kris Pitzek and Kyle McKay (Polysonic Bloom).

Together they all bring tons of ideas into the mix and the result is a masterfully produced, very original and innovative body of work. It is described by the band as electronic rock, but really it is impossible to connect their music to any genre — there are no similar songs here and the shape-shifting, experimental approach makes it impossible for listeners to predict their next move.

The release is out now and musicians are already finishing their second EP, with the plans to begin working on the debut album at the beginning of next year. Exciting times.

[ep] Scalping – Flood Remixed

If 19 minutes of phenomenal EP Flood from Scalping was not enough for you, then this collection of remixes on the songs from it would definitely be an amazing addition.

The release features exceptional and inventive reworkings of the tracks from such artists as Hodge, Laurel Halo, object blue, Azu Tiwaline, AQXDM and Mogwai.

[album] W. H. Lung – Vanities

In between the release of their first and second albums, there have been some changes for British group W. H. Lung, but the end product of their hard work proves just how talented they are.

Vanities keeps the same infectious spirit as 2019’s Incidental Music but is presented in a more direct, fun, extroverted form. Every song on the LP is a true hit and some of them are true dancefloor diamonds.

[album] Blue Moon – Black Hole

It has been a while since we last heard from Hatcham Social but looks like they are getting back together now. The guys are set to release a compilation album soon and actually are playing their first gig in five years on October 5.

In the meantime, Finn Kidd, one of the group members, has released a new album under the moniker Blue Moon earlier this year, through his own Crocodile Laboratories. It includes the tracks he recorded between his bedroom in North East London and Amy Studt’s Sleepwalker Studio, from 2014 through 2018.

As described on the Bandcamp page, “Black Hole sees him explore loss, lust, regret, depression and deception through drum machines, intertwined guitar lines and distorted vocals”. The record features 8 gorgeous lo-fi indie/noise pop songs with beautiful melodies, wrapped up in a dark and sentimental mood. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

[album] Breeze – Mixed Up

In August Toronto-based producer and artist Josh Korody aka Breeze put out his grand album Only Up, and now he is following it up with a new EP Mixed Up.

It features a collection of remixes/reworkings of tracks from the LP done by such artists as Korea Town Acid, JFK MSTRKRFT, A Place to Bury Strangers, Zoon, Prince Josh and We Turned to Red. The music video for the record’s highlight “Ecstasy On Keele Street” comes together with the release.
