[song] Humour – Wrangel

Glasgow’s noisy avant-rock masterminds Humour deliver one more time with the new single “Wrangel”, out now via tastemaker label So Young Records. The song is a haunting and intense piece, with the band blending together their raw energy, emotional depth and exciting storytelling.

The actual story behind the track is very interesting and worth getting into it. Frontman Andreas had the following to say about it:

“‘Wrangel’ is inspired by different stories of polar exploration. I was reading the biography of Captain Robert Scott who led an expedition of five men to be the first to reach the South Pole, all of whom died on the return journey in an unrelenting blizzard. The music had come together already, and the plodding, steady rhythm of the verses made me think of trudging through snow. I had recently watched an episode of Our Planet which showed footage of Wrangel Island in the arctic circle, an uninhabited place where polar bears are now arriving in their thousands to hunt because of the lack of sea ice. I thought that there could be something peaceful about being in a place like that, and wanted the character in the song to be imagining living his life out on Wrangel as he makes his way across the ice without much hope of survival.

An Indigenous Alaskan woman called Ada Blackjack actually did this after being sent to Wrangel as part of a doomed expedition of which she was the sole survivor, living alone on the island for nearly two years while teaching herself to hunt and to fend off the polar bears which she had a mortal fear of. A really incredible person. These stories of both survival and accepting fate at the end of the world were the inspiration for the song”.

[song] Oscar Browne – Somebody Else

London-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Oscar Browne will release his debut EP If Only on October 20 via So Young Records.

Along with the news Oscar is sharing a new single “Somebody Else”, his own take on contemporary indie folk. It is a captivating track that references many of the genre’s greats and adds a personal touch to the sound as well.

Speaking about it, Browne says: “This is a comment on how one’s individuality can be hindered by the act of people pleasing. It’s about people changing themselves to fit into different circles/relationships resulting in an inevitable identity crisis down the line. “You gave up yourself for somebody else and it caught up”.

[song] The Natvral – Summer of Hell

Having teased us already with the singles “Lucifer’s Glory” and “A Glass of Laughter”, The Natvral (aka Kip Berman, former frontperson of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) unleashes another great cut “Summer of Hell”. It is taken from his forthcoming new solo album The Summer of No Light, due out on September 1 via Dirty Bingo Records.

The song is a heartfelt and relatable piece that showcases Kip’s talent for crafting catchy folk rock tunes with emotional depth. He says the following about it:

“Rich kids slum it, young adults cling to the costume of youth, day and night are just different reasons to draw the blinds, impetuous love turns to rancor, and a faint yellow cloud of decadent penury settles upon a crumbling shared rental. You won’t be getting your security deposit back. Friends go and come and go again, and there’s a fellow hanging about called “the doctor” that no medical board would rightly certify. It only ends when pantomimed tragedy gives way to the real deal — or the season changes”.

[song] MJ Lenderman – Knockin

Just last month MJ Lenderman shared his first single after signing to ANTI- titled “Rudolph”, and now he is unveiling the B-side to it, a beautiful and introspective “Knockin”.

First appearing on a self-recorded EP, the song was written between the creation and release of Lenderman’s album Boat Songs. The new version was recorded at Drop of Sun Studios and is a true present for fans as it is a masterpiece of songwriting and musical craftsmanship of this incredibly exciting musician.

[song] SUDS – Paint My Body

Emo/indie four-piece SUDS are back with a brand new single “Paint My Body”, a hard-hitting and extremely catchy, fuzzy number. It is out with the announcement of their debut LP titled The Great Overgrowth, set for release on November 3 via Big Scary Monsters. The album was recorded in Kent with producer Ian Sadler (Roam, Anavae).

Speaking of the new track the band said: “This song centres us back to the concept of the record. It’s about being reluctant to go out with friends – but finding solace in being with yourself in nature. Being the first time we are introduced to The Great Overgrowth as a character”.
