[ep] Born At Midnite – Alternity

Every song on Alternity, a short new extended play by Born At Midnite is so good and catchy that after just a couple of spins you’ll immediately fall in love with it.

The Montreal-based duo of Amery Sandford (Alpen Glow, BBQT) and David Carriere (DVC Refreshments, TOPS) began writing together in late 2018, and with each release they are leveling up on their very own brand of smart, fun and pleasing to the ear independent pop music.

[album] Sonic Hawkins – Muscle Beach

It is very nice to stumble upon a real gem by the end of the year. This is exactly what the debut LP by Sonic Hawkins (a solo project of Darrell Hawkins, ex-Wild Palms guitarist) is.

Titled Muscle Beach, it is a brilliant collection of 10 ultra-hooky tracks, framed with distortion, dance punk sensibilities and unstoppable energy. This album will get you in the groove with its guitar riffs alongside cracking basslines and infectious spirit.

[album] Carla Dal Forno – Come Around

Few musicians are capable of creating so much and being so authentic with such a limited setup. Carla Dal Forno is definitely one of those people. During the last years she has mastered her own sound — a mysterious, very distinctive, dark-ish and minimal post-punk.

Her new album Come Around follows the path smoothly. It is another remarkable addition to her discography, which sometimes feels like a slow walk through the forest early in the evening. A fantastic listening experience for this time of the year.

[album] The Haunted Youth – Dawn Of The Freak

The Haunted Youth, a project of 29-year-old Joachim Liebens, just released a debut LP titled Dawn Of The Freak, and it is truly brilliant. The record is full of dreamy hooks, hazy vocals and great instrumentation work that will get you hooked from the very first song.

It possesses (in addition to obvious 80s and 90s references) that inimitable feel of blog-era indie rock/dream pop music of the late 00s and early 10s which we have much less nowadays so it is definitely a welcome addition. Blissed-out, moody and very personal, the album gets stuck in your head immediately and begs for repeated listens.

What is also quite important, the new songs are very cool as well and they are not overshadowed by the fantastic early singles (like “Teen Rebel”, “Gone” and masterful “Coming Home”), so the album feels really complete and well-balanced.
