[album] Van Houten – The Tallest Room

On their long-awaited debut LP The Tallest Room, Leeds group Van Houten have carefully combined elements of lo-fi, dream pop, and garage rock to create eight tracks of pure shoegaze bliss.

The record captures the essence of the genre while infusing it with a contemporary edge, establishing Van Houten as a noteworthy presence in the indie music scene. From the very first track, “Black And White” the outfit invites listeners into a world of hazy guitars, ethereal vocals, and immersive soundscapes.

Having enlisted the ears and ideas of producer Alex Greaves (bdrmm, Working Men’s Club, Bloc Party), the album’s production is layered and textured, creating a sonic landscape that feels both expansive and intimate. Each song unfolds like a vivid dream, with swirling melodies and introspective lyrics that draw you in deeper with each listen.

After unveiling “Accidental Doom” in October, their first new song since the highly praised debut album World To Me (2022), Tyneside’s Pit Pony have just returned with a new stomper “Fuzzy”.

This track delves into the complex world of dating and relationships in 2024, showcasing Pit Pony in peak form, with Jackie Purver’s powerful vocals dominating the dynamic crescendos and intense drops.

In conjunction with their new music, Pit Pony has launched a special 7” single featuring both new songs.

[album] Treeboy & Arc – Natural Habitat

Leeds’ Treeboy & Arc released their debut album Natural Habitat last week via Clue Records/EMI North. Long time in the making, it absolutely delivers and will satisfy all the existing fans and will welcome many new ones.

Five-piece group put out their most ambitious collection of songs with dark and atmospheric post-punk soundscapes, gritty guitar riffs, and introspective lyrics. Every track is special in its own way as all of them have their own meaning and story, providing a captivating and evocative exploration of the human experience.

Natural Habitat invites listeners to think and reflect on the world we live in, question societal norms, and embrace the power of music as a catalyst for change.

[video] Treeboy & Arc – Behind The Curtain

Things are bleak in general all factors considered and who knows if they will ever get better. It feels like Leeds’ Treeboy & Arc understand this sentiment very well and drop on us their darkest-sounding track to date, a brooding and nervy “Behind The Curtain” (it follows the earlier released “Retirement” and “False Objects” from the upcoming LP Natural Habitat).

For the gloomy song about the inevitability of death that we all will face at some point, it also carries some odd sense of calmness and the feeling of acceptance. This fact does not make it any less sinister though, with the group spicing up their post-punk sensibilities to the maximum extent.
