[album] The Natvral – Summer of No Light

It’s not often that musicians manage to reinvent themselves the way Kip Berman did. Already having a great career with his cult shoegaze band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, he later started releasing music under the name The Natvral, playing catchy, clever and powerful folk rock.

Summer of No Light is his second album (out now on Dirty Bingo Records), with the songs (according to him) “living somewhere between the climate crisis of 1816, the climate crisis of now, and the climate crisis of the heart”.

The record is notable for its stripped-down production and a big emphasis on storytelling. Berman keeps the arrangements of the songs spare and simple, allowing his lyrics and melodies to shine through. His music often feels like an honest conversation between himself and the listener, with confessional lyrics that feel both personal and universal at the same time.

[song] The Natvral – Summer of Hell

Having teased us already with the singles “Lucifer’s Glory” and “A Glass of Laughter”, The Natvral (aka Kip Berman, former frontperson of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) unleashes another great cut “Summer of Hell”. It is taken from his forthcoming new solo album The Summer of No Light, due out on September 1 via Dirty Bingo Records.

The song is a heartfelt and relatable piece that showcases Kip’s talent for crafting catchy folk rock tunes with emotional depth. He says the following about it:

“Rich kids slum it, young adults cling to the costume of youth, day and night are just different reasons to draw the blinds, impetuous love turns to rancor, and a faint yellow cloud of decadent penury settles upon a crumbling shared rental. You won’t be getting your security deposit back. Friends go and come and go again, and there’s a fellow hanging about called “the doctor” that no medical board would rightly certify. It only ends when pantomimed tragedy gives way to the real deal — or the season changes”.
