In July Treeboy & Arc released their excellent debut LP Natural Habitat, and now they are sharing a new music video for the album’s opener “Midnight Mass”.
It was filmed, directed & edited by CAP Media and sees the band members driving around the streets of Leeds on a tandem bicycle.
Although it sounds really beautiful and mellow, don’t let it trick you — This Is Not Your Fault by Green Gardens is quite a heavy album. The band mentioned in a press release that it flows like a community grieving and guides you through the stages of loss but ultimately resolves on the other side, and it is definitely possible to feel that.
It is loaded with storytelling and introspective lyrics that are delivered with a sense of vulnerability and honesty, which adds to the emotional depth of the album. The overall mood is melancholic and fragile, getting right into your head. For example “A Cradling”, the standout from the record hits the listener right away with some outstanding lyricism: “No one’s writing fables anymore / The horror is real / The horror is staring at me from the palm of my hand”. It is gorgeous, but also soul-crushing.
Musically it is fantastic as well, with the group’s use of intricate guitar riffs, some saxophone and lush harmonies creating a rich and layered sound that draws the listener in. The LP is a must-listen for anyone who loves art rock that speaks to the heart and stays with the listener for a long time after it finishes.
Leeds’ Treeboy & Arc released their debut album Natural Habitat last week via Clue Records/EMI North. Long time in the making, it absolutely delivers and will satisfy all the existing fans and will welcome many new ones.
Five-piece group put out their most ambitious collection of songs with dark and atmospheric post-punk soundscapes, gritty guitar riffs, and introspective lyrics. Every track is special in its own way as all of them have their own meaning and story, providing a captivating and evocative exploration of the human experience.
Natural Habitat invites listeners to think and reflect on the world we live in, question societal norms, and embrace the power of music as a catalyst for change.
Things are bleak in general all factors considered and who knows if they will ever get better. It feels like Leeds’ Treeboy & Arc understand this sentiment very well and drop on us their darkest-sounding track to date, a brooding and nervy “Behind The Curtain” (it follows the earlier released “Retirement” and “False Objects” from the upcoming LP Natural Habitat).
For the gloomy song about the inevitability of death that we all will face at some point, it also carries some odd sense of calmness and the feeling of acceptance. This fact does not make it any less sinister though, with the group spicing up their post-punk sensibilities to the maximum extent.
Having teased us already with the single “Things I Didn’t Do” back in April, Green Gardens unleash another stunning cut, a melodic “This Is My Fault”. It is taken from their upcoming debut album This Is Not Your Fault, set for release via Come Play With Me Records / EMI North on August 18.
Beautifully arranged, the song shines with ethereal vocal harmonies floating over the music, creating a sense of otherworldliness, with Jacob Cracknell (vocals, bass) taking the lead lyrically in a whirlwind state of inspiration after hearing a Ralph Ineson monologue in which he’s crying & pleading with God to lift an imagined curse from him. Delivered in the smoothest way possible the track perfectly captures the sense of vulnerability and uncertainty.
Talking about the song, Jacob says: “This is my Fault is a lilting, gentle, and perhaps unfounded reminder that we all are to blame for our failures, and that those failures affect all those around you. It is stuck between our self-destructive natures and our tenderness. Soft, moving parts create a sweet tension that carries you through the song and into the record as a whole. The chorus lands at ‘Lay my children’s ugliness at my feet’, as a plea to hoard the blame for the failures of the people you love”.
