[album] Sourface – The Eternal Summer

Eclectic Anglo-Parisan quartet Sourface share today their debut The Eternal Summer, and it is not just an album; it’s a grandiose concept record with a broad theme centred on bringing back light to a dimmed universe while confronting a supreme malevolent force known as the ‘Lizard King’.

Crafted by the enigmatic four musicians, this masterpiece transcends conventional boundaries of genre, weaving together a tapestry of sound that defies categorization. It is a melting pot of jazz, post-punk, disco house, funk, psychedelic pop, lounge etc. made by real music lifers who are very passionate about their craft and not willing to compromise in terms of quality.

Maximalistic in its scope and delivery, the album smoothly floats from start to finish, with Sourface creating a whole fictional world in which it is set (with even the comic book version of the album available) and with twists and turns in every corner.

In a world where the airwaves often resonate with the discordant notes of anger and despair, the emergence of a musical offering that feels so truly fun and positive is very exciting.

On March 22 Anglo-Parisian quartet Sourface will release The Eternal Summer, their highly anticipated debut record, described as an eclectic 11-song sequence celebrating sunlight, abundance and positivity, while exploring the dangers of having such things stripped away from us.

We have heard some amazing songs out of it already and now the four-piece continues their hot streak of singles with the new offering “Vin Rosé” — a quintessential example of their bombastic and maximalist approach to music. It is released alongside the accompanying animatic video, set within the comic book world the group created for the album.

Having teased us already with the singles “Solaire” and “Lizard King”, the Anglo-Parisian quartet Sourface unleashes another great song/video “Careless Love”. A true antidote to cynicism, this is a sincere and playful cut about love and its mighty power. It is taken from their forthcoming album The Eternal Summer due out on March 22.

The song derives an appeal from its over-the-top piano-fuelled 70s glam arrangement and vocalist/guitarist Ludo Aslangul’s heartfelt delivery, which makes it an ultra-smooth and enjoyable earworm.

Anglo-Parisian quartet Sourface returns with the single “Lizard King”, a hard-hitting neo-psychedelic post-punk number that is both trippy and super groovy. It is out with the announcement of their debut LP titled The Eternal Summer (out March 22), which was recorded at the band’s self-made Babylon Studio in Paris during last year’s heatwave.

The second part of the group’s forthcoming album (which promises to be something truly special), this song established The Eternal Summer‘s main antagonist — Toni Bossi AKA ‘The Lizard King’. The group’s evil-mastermind manager has built a machine to harness the power of the sun (explored on the previous single “Solaire”), using it to control the surrounding population. The band explains it further:

“The Lizard King is a god gone mad. Toni Bossi has realised the infinitely unhinged potential of the sun’s energy and is ready to use it for his mad exploits. ‘Lizard King’ celebrates Bossi’s ego through a satire of corporate greed and arrogance. It’s a warning of the consequences of letting greed fester into power”.

Sourface is an Anglo-Parisian quartet that blends diverse musical genres such as new wave, surf rock, psychedelia, funk and electronic music into their sound.

Known for their eclectic and offbeat style, the band returned with the brand new single “Solaire”, a playful ode to the sun and its power as both a giver and destroyer of life.

Presented as a manifesto of sorts (the track offers a prelude for the forthcoming narrative saga The Eternal Summer), it is an excellent example of Sourface’s ability to mix styles into an irresistible hook-laden song. It is also out with the equally surreal and fun music video, directed by Jurskuu.
