[album] FACS – Still Life In Decay

Still Life In Decay, the newest album by Chicago trio FACS, is a stunning masterpiece. Experimental at its core, it is a perfect mix of post-punk, experimental rock, and ambient sounds that create a unique and captivating sonic landscape.

Since the release of Void Moments (2020), the group has been moving (and experimenting) in the same direction; moreover, the musicians dubbed their new LP as a continuation of the previous release Present Tense (2021). It has a lot of progressive guitar lines, echoey vocals and a general atmosphere of controlled chaos, like someone is keeping a barrage of dark energy in check.

The most striking thing here is, of course, the absence of gravity in music, and also perpetual motion. From the opening track “Constellation” to the closing song “New Flag”, FACS takes listeners on a journey through a range of emotions, moods, and textures. The songs are intricately crafted with layers of guitars, drums, and synths that build up and break down in unexpected ways. It is a bold and ambitious album that showcases FACS’s unique sound and vision.

[album] Connections – Cool Change

Connections from Columbus (Ohio) return with a new record titled Cool Change, on which the band draws on a wide range of influences, from punk rock to classic rock to DIY indie.

The result is a sound that is both cohesive and extremely catchy, with a sense of playfulness that is characteristic of the best traditions of the US indie rock music scene. Throughout the album, the group’s songwriting shines, with lyrics capturing all possible themes, both hyper-regional and universal. The vocals are raw and emotive, perfectly complementing the band’s rock sound.

[album] En Attendant Ana – Principia

On their third album Principia, a Parisian five-piece En Attendant Ana achieve something that can be called a real indie pop triumph. Ringing guitars, light melancholy feel, rare entrances of saxophone and trumpet — there is everything here to please even the most sophisticated listener.

The band’s magnetism and virtuosity seep through every instrument, through every small detail, but most often via the voice of vocalist Margaux Bouchaudon, which is completing the brilliant arrangements. If you are a fan of dreamy, vintage and experimental music with a touch of French charm, Principia is definitely worth checking out.

[album] FACS – Present Tense

Chicago-based FACS have always had a rather heavy sound with unusual guitar structures and tricky instrument combinations. But their newest LP Present Tense seems to be their most accessible, while still being quite harsh and visceral for the unprepared listener.

On it the trio once again create their own unique post-genre world, that is full of overloaded guitars, noisy mechanics, winding rhythms and dark atmosphere of aggravating anxiety. Even during the sunny days of May the album will transport you to the underground, with the feel like you are listening to it inside the abandoned factory. Great stuff.
