[ep] audiobooks – Gulliver

With their latest release Gulliver, audiobooks (the duo of David Wrench and Evangeline Ling) continue what they do best, mixing incredibly catchy pop hooks and their signature eclectic musical experimentation.

All four songs on the new EP are truly unique and reflect everything for what we fell in love with this duet on the previous two albums. Some bizarre storytelling (“Milan Fashion Week”), glorious synth-pop (“Tryna Tryna Take Control”), haunting weirdness (“Beekeeper”), cool surprises (Manchester MC OneDa’s feature on “Burnt Pictures”) — there’s plenty to enjoy here.

Listen below and buy Gulliver on Bandcamp (available on very limited 10″ vinyl featuring a rare bonus track).

Erasing memories can be tricky, especially if you are audiobooks. Every taken step is documented, every little thing is burnt into the memories, and the brightest of them haunt your mind right before falling asleep. But if nothing can be done about those obsessive thoughts, perhaps the best solution is to find help among other suffering like-minded people.

The London-based duo of David Wrench and Evangeline Ling follow this pattern on their new single. “Burnt Pictures”, which serves as a second taste of their upcoming Gulliver EP (after 2022’s “Tryna Tryna Take Control”), flows on a ringing synth rumble and the contrast of two voices — vocalist Ling’s and guest Manchester MC OneDa’s, who opened for audiobooks’ several shows in the past. Her freestyle approach brings the group’s music to life even more, balancing between annoyed frustration and encouraging indifference.

The song is paired with the music video, which was filmed on the slate grey Ogwen Beach on a cold Welsh winter weekend and directed by Wrench’s eldest son Louis & also features his youngest child Auberon.

At the beginning of October, experimental pop duo audiobooks will return with their new record Astro Tough, set for release through Heavenly Records.

We have already heard two singles, “The Doll” & “LaLaLa It’s The Good Life” and now the group shares another one, the electronic and chaotic 6-minute long masterpiece “Black Lipstick”.

It goes together with the music video, on which Evangeline Ling, one of the band members, is creating an oil-on-canvas artwork (limited edition deluxe eco-wax LP will include a whole 12×12” 20-page booklet, which will have accompanying artwork for each song from the tracklist).
