[song] bdrmm – Be Careful

Creating a nostalgic atmosphere of the foggy past is something that bdrmm have always been bloody good at. But if previously the veil of thick shoegaze covered all other sounds, then the new single “Be Careful” shows what it means to make this genre intimate and minimalistic.

The new single generally leads the band into uncharted territory in many ways: guitar and bass are intertwined into an organic whole and Ryan Smith’s always muted vocals sound surprisingly clean. Even rhythms with their trip hop-ish beat evoke associations with Portishead — a band that to a somewhat extent became a source of inspiration for this song.

When the line “Be Careful of Yourself” plays out at the end of the track, the whole hauntological power of the band comes out. But once the phrase ends with the words “Prepare for something else, it’s coming” you understand — bdrmm visited the future before us.

Set for release on June 30 via Mogwai’s Rock Action Records, bdrmm have announced their new album I Don’t Know. The first single out of it is a live favourite “It’s Just A Bit Of Blood”.

The quiet intros in the band’s music are very deceptive, and the new song captures this perfectly. It is a burst of buzzing guitar energy, a reflection of the love for the blurred sound, where post-rock and shoegaze come together into one organic whole. The lyrics fit perfectly into the arrangements, but perhaps the strongest moments in bdrmm’s music are hidden where the instruments no longer hold back the voice — as in the last minute of the new single.

The track is out with the glitchy and effective video, directed, filmed and edited by Chris Tomsett (Innerstrings).

Hull-based band bdrmm have released their debut Bedroom earlier this year, an outstanding and classic-feeling gem of a record. Now they are following it up with the new visuals for the LP’s standout and latest single, “Gush”.

The video is presented as a short film about the group, recorded at Gorilla Studios in Hull and filmed & edited by Sam Joyce.
